The training to become a glider pilot

It is difficult to put into words the variety of experiences and impressions that affect the pilot during a flight. An avid pilot once said: "Why should I go on vacation, if I can experience so much more in one day, during a flight?"

And it's true. Once succumbed to the fascination of gliding, it is hard to leave it anytime soon.

It's like an addiction - in a positive sense.

But even those who do not want to commit themselves fully to aviation will find it to be an extremely exciting sport, a highly interesting hobby and a demanding challenge.

It is not even that difficult to acquire a gliding license.

You can start the glider training at the age of 14. First with an instructor and after about 50 to 70 landings in a double seater, it might be time to fly alone.

Yes, that’s right, beautiful solo flights are part of to the training too! Your instructor will be watching you from the ground and remain in contact with you via radio.

Even those who are no longer teenagers can fulfill their dream of flying! Many of our students start their pilot training after graduation, some after their children are out of the house, and others even after retirement. A prerequisite is that a flight doctor determines your fitness, but this should not be a problem for the average healthy person.

For beginners, we recommend a two-week stay to get started. After that, you will probably return home with you first “Badge”, the pin that marks your first successful solo flight.

Of course, you can also spend single days or weekends at our school and thus also reach your goal.

The two weeks at the beginning of the training have proved to be ideal.

Overall, you should expect to be able to obtain the glider license

within a year. The theoretical part and its corresponding exam can be done during the winter. At the end of the training there will be an examination flight, after which you will obtain your "Glider Pilot License". You are then entitled, without supervision of an instructor, to fly and take passengers.

What comes after the license?

After having freshly obtained your license, you might ask yourself: what comes next? It is only now that you will start your actual gliding adventure. Before you only flew in the proximity of the airfield; now it is time for your first cross country flights, which will take you far into the Alps. Of course, you are always supported by our instrcutors and the world class pilots of the local Alp Flight Center.

It does not necessarily have to be sporty cross country flying. Even only the relaxing gliding from peak to peak in the surrounding area, allows you to feel the freedom of flying.

What about loopings, roles or turns? The road to aerobatic flying is also open to you.
